Water treatment plant concrete repairs

Hindle Mason Projects (HMP) was engaged by a public sector operator to undertake repairs to a water reclamation plant in the Mpumalanga coalfields. The plant treats mine-impacted water to a standards suitable for reuse by a colliery and surplus water discharged into the environment, using sophisticated processes.

Considering the plant’s continuous exposure to corrosive acid mine drainage – acidic water rich in dissolved salts, especially sulphates and heavy minerals – the client entrusted a professional that can guarantee durable workmanship. HMP has an impressive track record returning assets operating in the harshest conditions to their original state and then prolonging their useable life.

The repairs were executed in two phases, the first of which entailed undertaking 60m2 of patch repairs to the inside of the filter tank using our tried-and-tested methods. After preparing the surface with shot blasting, a square-edged saw cut was made around the perimeter of the affected areas and damaged concrete removed using electrical breakers. Thereafter, the substrate was cleaned and the patch applied, the surface levelled and finished and allowed to cure. The repaired areas were then primed and waterproofed.

This work was followed by repairs undertaken to the filtered water tank. The structure was sandblasted and cracks and joints in the walls, floor and roof then sealed with a high-performance system that allows variable and high movement levels in one or more directions while maintaining a watertight seal. A total of 200m2 was sealed in this manner.

The entire project was completed in only two weeks and according to specification.
