Concrete Tank Repair
Hindle Mason Projects is forging ahead with large-scale repairs to this concrete tank that stores about 7,5ML of clean water for furnace operations. The reservoir has continued to serve a leading platinum-group metals producer since it was commissioned in the late 1970s. Although the inside is still intact, the external portion has fallen into a serious state of disrepair since then. Large areas of spalled concrete and cracks compromise the structural integrity of the infrastructure. We were, therefore, tasked with not only restoring it to its original state but to also prolong its useable life.
Our team has already started with the extensive preparatory work, including washing and then sandblasting the surface to achieve a sound substrate and to reveal all defects that need to be addressed.
We will then start undertaking the repairs, opening all cracks, before repairing them with the best materials available on the market. This includes a free-flowing, high strength, cementitious micro concrete containing aggregates of 9mm maximum size. Crack injection will be undertaken with a two-part, solvent-free, low viscosity injection-liquid based on high-strength epoxy resins.
Thereafter, the entire structure will be reinforced with carbon-fibre strips, one at the top and at the base and two in the middle. In total, Hindle Mason Projects will install about 1,2km of carbon fibre strapping.
The existing and new substrate will then be coated with a two-part polymer modified cementitious waterproof slurry, consisting of a liquid polymer- and cement-based mix that incorporates special admixtures.
